12th day of Manga Advent Calendar 2015

12th day of Manga Advent Calendar 2015
Hello everyone, here is the twelfth day of Manga Advent Calendar 2015.Now as I said as yesterday’s hint that today’s manga  is a legendry horror manga/Anime that was based on a series of video games. Today’s Manga is Higurashi also known as When the Cicadas Cry.

Now I bought this manga after I got confused watching the Anime. So as I do when I am confused about a show I look into the source material. I have read the Abducted by Demons Arc which helped me understand how the story is structured. If you think of every story as a route in a video game and the choices, you make as the main character determine the ending of the route you are going down. The manga is better at explain what is going on within the overarching plot of the manga series.

The basic plot of the manga is that the protagonist Keiichi moves to the small town of Hinamizawa. The then makes friends with some of the locals. Now the plot of reach arc diverges when it comes to the relationships with the friends and also when it comes to the Cotton Drifting Festival which is the linking event that happens in every arc. The main thing I can say is that this manga is full of horror, violence and lots of other disturbing elements, so if you are sensitive to these elements I would steer clear of it (it can go from cute girls doing cute things to crazy murder party in the flip of a page) as it was put under restrictions for sale when it came out.

Now I like this manga because of each arc brings in new elements and delves into the goings on in the village. The arc system is also really good because we can project yourself into the story (as this was a game and you are the protagonist) and usually it has a lot of plot twists along the way as you understand one elements of the lore in that arc. The endings of each arc end in the character you are following go through some traumatic event (nine times out of ten resulting in a gruesome death or five) and then in the next arc it resets in back to the opening of the plot line before the diverging event happened which cased that arc to take place. You should read the manga and watch the show (there are 2 seasons and sets of OVAs that cover some of the less popular arcs) because the main plot is well put together and this is referred to as a horror manga classic. Which I would recommend this as being in your reading list(also some of the manga panels  are creapy without context such as the one below)

I shall see you guys tomorrow for the 13th day of the Manga Advent Calendar, here is this hint for today. The manga I will be looking into tomorrow is a sport manga I loved and I was so happy when this was made into a fantastic anime.

Bye for now
Fiona
